Een snelle en flexibele browser van Google
Chrome is een webbrowser ontwikkeld door Google. Het wordt gekenmerkt door zijn snelheid en vele innovatieve functies.
Net zoals Apple doet met hun Safari-browser, bouwt Chrome voort op het open source-project Webkit om de HTML-weergave uit te voeren. Webkit staat bekend om zijn Hoge prestaties en standaardcompatibiliteit en is ook de drijvende kracht achter de meeste mobiele browsers. Vanaf versie 28 heeft Google zijn eigen fork van Webkit gebruikt, genaamd Blink in Chrome. In tegenstelling tot Safari gebruikt Chrome echter de V8 JavaScript-engine die bij Google is ontwikkeld en een nieuwe standaard heeft gezet in JavaScript-uitvoering met hoge snelheid. Dit is niet verwonderlijk, aangezien JavaScript-prestaties cruciaal zijn voor complexe webapplicaties zoals die van Google eigen GMail en Google Docs. Chrome zelf is ook een open source-project.
Chrome heeft ook nieuwe paradigma's geïntroduceerd in het ontwerp van de gebruikersinterface die sindsdien zijn gekopieerd door de andere spelers in de browserruimte. Een daarvan is de ruimtebesparende lay-out van de tabbladen bovenaan, boven de adresbalk. Er bestaat geen aparte menubalk, waardoor de beschikbare ruimte voor de weergave van de webpagina zelf wordt gemaximaliseerd. Ook ontbreekt er een apart zoekveld in Chrome, omdat je ook zoekopdrachten in de adresbalk kunt invoeren. Chrome kan automatisch detecteren of de ingevoerde tekenreeks een zoekopdracht of een adres is.
Veiligheid
Google heeft veel aandacht besteed aan beveiliging en heeft een nieuw concept ontwikkeld om browsercrashes te voorkomen. Elk tabblad wordt in zijn eigen proces uitgevoerd, waardoor wordt voorkomen dat een enkel gecrasht tabblad de hele browser platlegt. Wanneer een tabblad crasht, kan het worden gesloten en kunt u de andere tabbladen blijven gebruiken.
Chrome maakt het voor de gebruiker heel gemakkelijk om op internet te surfen zonder sporen achter te laten op de lokale machine. U opent gewoon een nieuw incognitotabblad en alle privé-informatie, zoals de browsegeschiedenis, wordt niet opgeslagen wanneer het tabblad wordt gesloten.
Google verzamelt veel informatie over de aard van een specifieke website via zijn crawlers van zoekmachines. Dit wordt in Chrome gebruikt om gebruikers te waarschuwen voor websites die schadelijke inhoud bevatten, zoals virussen.
Gebruikersprofielen
Een andere functie die specifiek is voor Chrome, is de mogelijkheid om verschillende gebruikersprofielen aan de browser toe te voegen om één webapplicatie via verschillende gebruikersaccounts te gebruiken. Chrome was een van de meest populaire browsers en was de laatste die DirectWrite-technologie voor het weergeven van lettertypen introduceerde in zijn Windows-versie.
